Plumbing & Heating Tips for Calgary Homeowners

Calgary's climate is one of the most demanding in Canada for residential plumbing and heating systems. With temperature swings from +35°C in summer to -40°C in winter, your home's infrastructure takes a beating year-round. At R N T Plumbing & Heating, we've seen every type of failure imaginable — and the truth is, many expensive emergencies are preventable with a bit of proactive maintenance and homeowner awareness.

This guide covers four of the most critical things every Calgary homeowner should know to protect their plumbing and heating systems. Whether you live in a newer build in Airdrie or a mature home in inner-city Calgary, these tips will help you avoid costly breakdowns, extend the life of your equipment, and know exactly what to do when something goes wrong. Remember: when in doubt, call a licensed professional — DIY repairs on gas lines, boilers, or main water lines can be dangerous and may void warranties.

Know Where Your Main Shut-Off Valve Is

In a burst pipe emergency, every second counts. Locate your main water shut-off valve before a crisis hits — it's typically near the water meter where the main line enters your home. Test it periodically to ensure it turns freely. If a pipe bursts, shutting off the water immediately can prevent thousands of dollars in damage. Tag the valve so everyone in the household knows where it is.

Schedule Annual Furnace Maintenance Before Winter

Calgary winters put heavy demands on heating systems. Scheduling a professional furnace tune-up in early fall — before the first cold snap — ensures your system runs efficiently and safely all season. A well-maintained furnace uses less energy, lasts longer, and is far less likely to break down during a cold snap. Your technician will check the heat exchanger for cracks (a carbon monoxide hazard), clean the burners, test safety controls, and replace filters.

Watch Your Boiler Pressure Gauge

If you have a boiler system, check the pressure gauge monthly. Ideal pressure is typically between 1.0 and 1.5 bar when the system is cold. If pressure drops below 1.0 bar, your boiler may shut off or fail to heat properly — you can often re-pressurize it yourself using the filling loop. If pressure keeps dropping or rises above 2.5 bar, call a professional. Persistent pressure loss usually indicates a leak somewhere in the system that needs attention.

Prevent Frozen Pipes During Cold Snaps

When temperatures drop below -20°C, pipes in unheated areas like garages, crawl spaces, and exterior walls are at risk of freezing — and frozen pipes can burst. Insulate exposed pipes with foam sleeves, leave cabinet doors under sinks open to let warm air circulate, and let a faucet drip slightly during extreme cold. If you're leaving town, keep your thermostat at least at 15°C. If a pipe freezes, never use an open flame to thaw it — use a hair dryer or call a professional.
