Burst Pipe? What to Do in the First 10 Minutes Before the Plumber Arrives

Knowing what to do when a pipe bursts in the first ten minutes is what limits the damage. Shut off your main water valve immediately, turn off the electricity to any affected area if water is near outlets or fixtures, drain the remaining water from your taps, and call a plumber. The order matters. Stopping the water comes first, then address any immediate safety risks. Once the situation is contained, focus on limiting damage while you wait for the plumber. If at any point the situation feels unsafe, skip the rest and call for help immediately.

Minute 1 to 2: Shut Off the Main Water Valve

The single most important action is to stop the water unless your safety is compromised. Go straight to your main water shut-off valve and turn it clockwise until the water stops. In most Calgary homes this valve is in the basement, utility room, or mechanical room near where the water line enters from the street, often close to the water meter.

Minute 2 to 3: Turn Off the Electricity If Needed

If water is near electrical outlets, light fixtures, or your electrical panel, turn off the power to that area at the breaker. Leave the area, keep everyone else out, and call 911 first, then your plumber.

After the main valve is closed, open the cold taps on the lowest level of your home to drain the water still sitting in the pipes. This relieves pressure in the system and clears water away from the burst section. Flush toilets once to clear the lines. If the burst is on a hot water line, turn off your water heater as well.

Minute 5 to 8: Contain and Protect

With the water stopped and draining, limit the damage in the affected area:

• Move furniture, electronics, rugs, and valuables out of the water
• Lay down towels and buckets to catch and contain remaining drips
• If the ceiling is bulging from water above, place a bucket underneath and keep clear, as a water-filled ceiling can collapse
• Photograph and video everything for your insurance claim before you start cleaning

If the burst happened in winter and the area is below freezing, do not attempt to heat the space rapidly. A sudden temperature swing can cause additional cracks in pipes that are already stressed. Let the plumber assess before you start warming things up.

Minute 8 to 10: Call Your Plumber

With the immediate situation under control, call for professional help. A burst pipe needs to be properly repaired, and any water damage needs to be assessed before mould develops. Describe what happened, where the burst is, and what you have already done so the plumber arrives prepared.

Have the following ready when you call: where the burst is located (which room, which floor), whether you were able to shut off the water, whether any water reached electrical fixtures, and whether it is a clean water line or a drain/sewer line.
