How to Shut Off Your Water in a Plumbing Emergency (Before We Arrive)

Knowing how to shut off your water in a plumbing emergency is the single most useful thing you can do before help arrives.

Shut off the water at the source as fast as possible. For a burst pipe, a failed water heater, or any situation where you cannot find a local valve, go straight to your main water shut-off valve and turn it clockwise until the water stops.

Knowing where these valves are before an emergency happens is the difference between a quick cleanup and thousands of dollars in water damage. The faster you stop the flow, the less damage you deal with.

How to Shut Off Your Water Step by Step

There are two levels of shut-off in most homes: individual fixture valves that stop water to one tap or appliance, and the main valve that stops water to the entire house. Start at the fixture level if you can identify the source. If not, go straight to the main.

Start With the Fixture Shut-Off Valve

Most plumbing fixtures have their own shut-off valve, which lets you stop water to that one fixture without affecting the rest of the house.

Toilet: Look for a small oval or football-shaped valve on the wall behind the toilet, near the floor, where the supply line connects to the tank. Turn it clockwise to close. If the toilet is overflowing, this is the fastest way to stop the water before it reaches the floor.

Sink: Open the cabinet beneath the sink. You will see one or two valves where the supply lines run up to the faucet. There is usually one for hot and one for cold. Turn both clockwise.

Water Heater: Your water heater has a cold water inlet valve at the top of the tank. Closing this stops water from feeding into the tank. If the tank itself is leaking or flooding, also turn off the power: flip the breaker for an electric unit, or turn the gas valve to “off” for a gas unit. Do not attempt to drain a hot tank without turning off the heat source first.

Washing Machine: Behind the washing machine, you will typically find two valves on the wall (hot and cold). Turn both clockwise. If a supply hose has burst and water is spraying, the fastest option may be to go straight to the main shut-off rather than trying to reach the wall valves behind a heavy machine.

Most of these are quarter-turn or twist valves. If the valve is stiff because it has not been turned in years, apply steady pressure rather than forcing it suddenly. A seized valve that snaps is worse than the original problem.

When to Go Straight to the Main Shut-Off Valve

Some emergencies cannot be contained at a single fixture. Go directly to your main water shut-off valve if you are dealing with:

• A burst or actively leaking pipe inside a wall, ceiling, or floor
• A failed or leaking water heater
• Water coming up through multiple drains at once
• Any flooding where you cannot identify the source quickly

The main shut-off stops all water entering your home, so it is the fastest way to stop the flow when the source is not obvious.

Where to Find Your Main Water Shut-Off Valve in a Calgary Home

In most Calgary homes, the main water shut-off valve is located on an interior wall, usually in the basement, utility room, or mechanical room, near where the water line enters the home from the street. It is often close to the water meter.

The valve will be one of two types. A gate valve is a round wheel you turn clockwise several full rotations to close. A ball valve is a straight lever you turn a quarter turn so it sits perpendicular to the pipe.

It is worth locating this valve today, before you ever need it. Make sure everyone in the household knows where it is. In a true emergency you do not want to be searching for it while water is spreading across the floor.

After the Water Is Off

Once you have stopped the flow, a few quick steps limit further damage while you wait for help:

• Open a few taps on the lowest level of the home to drain remaining water from the pipes and relieve pressure
• For a water heater emergency, turn off the power to the unit, either the gas supply valve or the electrical breaker
• Move furniture, electronics, and valuables away from the water
• Soak up standing water with towels to slow its spread toward walls and flooring
• Photograph the damage for your insurance provider before you start cleaning up
• If water has reached any electrical outlets, switches, or your panel, do not touch them. Turn off the main breaker from a dry location if you can do so safely, and let the plumber and an electrician assess before restoring power.
• If the flooding involves sewage (water coming up through floor drains or toilets), avoid direct contact. Sewage water is a health hazard. Keep children and pets out of the area until it has been professionally cleaned.

What If You Cannot Find or Turn the Valve?
